On May 31, ACC participated in a roundtable organized by the Department of Justice Antitrust Division on the topic of anticompetitive regulations. ACC shared member perspectives on regulations in the alcohol and healthcare industries. ACC also noted the anticompetitive effects of the regulations governing the legal profession – specifically restrictions on multijurisdictional practice and non-lawyer ownership of firms. ACC described how state unauthorized practice of law restrictions are too broadly applied and restrict competition both within and outside of the legal profession. ACC also noted that the prohibition on non-lawyer investment in law firms serves to restrict innovation and raise the cost of legal services. ACC’s written submission to the DOJ can be found here.
